John Slezak's career was varied and full of accomplishments. He was born in Czechoslovakia, April 18, 1896. He came to the United States (U.S.) as a young lad and enlisted as a private in the Ordnance Corps during World War I. He received a degree in Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1923 and began a career in various machining companies. In 1924, Slezak was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Ordnance Department Reserve. He was called to active duty in 1940 and assigned the duty of organizing the Machine Tools Division of the Chicago Ordnance District. He quickly rose in rank to his final rank of Colonel in 1943. Became Assistant Secretary of the Army in 1953.
