Biographical notes:

Henry Clay Hodges, Jr. (b. Apr. 20, 1860, Washington, D.C.-d. 1963), U.S. Army officer, graduated from West Point in 1881. His first twenty years of service were with the 22nd Infantry Regiment, including time in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War and in Alaska in 1909 and 1910. Later, he served in the Office of the Army Chief of Staff, took command of the 1st Infantry Regiment in Hawaii, and led the 39th Division as commanding general for the American Expeditionary Force in 1917 and 1918. He concluded his career as commanding general of Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, and retired in 1920.
