Clifford Donald Simak was a noted science fiction author and newspaper journalist. He was born in Millville, Wisconsin in 1904 and studied journalism at the University of Wisconsin. He edited newspapers in Michigan, Iowa, North Dakota, and Missouri during the 1930s, worked for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune from 1939-1976, and became news editor of the Star in 1949.
He began his career as a science fiction writer with the publication of "Wonder Stories" in 1931. He published stories in Astounding Science Fiction and Galaxy Magazine in addition to publishing numerous novels, including the notable, City, for which he won the International Fantasy Award. He also was awarded the Hugo Award, the Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America, and a Nebula Award. He was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 1973 and died in 1988.
