William Jarvis was born in 1770 in Boston, Mass. He became involved in the trading business and settled in Lisbon in 1802. From 1802-1811 he maintained a trading house there and served as U.S. charge d'affaires and consul to Portugal. He returned to the U.S. in 1811, settling in Weathersfield, Vt., where he bred and sold merino sheep which he had exported from Lisbon before he left.

In 1808 William Jarvis married Mary Pepperell Sparhawk, of Boston, and they had two daughters. In 1817 Jarvis married Ann Bailey Bartlett, and together they had ten children. William Jarvis died in 1859 and is buried in Weathersfield, Vt.
