Biographical notes:

Mr J. E. Nixonwestwood, born in New Zealand in 1884, worked in Sydney for the trading and steamship company Burns, Philp & Co., in the early years of this century. Later, he lived in Daru and Samarai in New Guinea. From 1907 to 1916, Nixonwestwood worked as a stevedore for Burns, Philp & Co., on a rubber plantation; and with the Australian administration as the Collector of Customs, Inspector of Pearl Shell and Beche de Mer Fishing, Inspector of Native Labor. He fought in the Great War, and was incapacitated for the remainder of his life. After the war, Mr Nixonwestwood maintained an interest in New Guinea and the Pacific region. He contributed to the Pacific Islands Monthly and was a Pacific Area official in the League of Nations. After many years in New Zealand, he settled with his wife on the Isle of Man. He died in 1968.
