Biographical notes:

Victor Hugo Schiro (1904-1992) entered New Orleans politics in 1949 when he won a seat on the city's Commission Council. In 1961, he became mayor of New Orleans when he was named to complete deLesseps S. Morrison's unexpired term. Schiro was elected in 1962 and re-elected in 1966, remaining mayor until 1970. He served New Orleans during a period of desegregation, a rebuilding effort following Hurricane Betsy, and the construction of the Louisiana Superdome. Mayor Schiro was actively interested in international trade relations. He was married to Margaret May Gibbes "Sunny" Schiro. Mr. and Mrs. Schiro worked on philanthropic activities. The Special Collections Reading Room of Tulane University's Howard-Tilton Memorial Library is named in their honor.
