Dick King-Smith was born March 27, 1922, in Bitton, Gloucestershire, England. He worked as a farmer for 20 years before earning a B.Ed from Bristol U. in 1975. The then taught primary school for 7 years, and became a full-time writer in 1982. His books for children have been praised for their warmth, sensitivity, and humor. His characters are animals, anthropomorphized to represent human foibles and strengths. His work has earned him several honors and awards.
