Hoffman, Francis Arnold, 1822-1903.
Biographical notes:
Immigrant from Hereford, Prussia who studied for the ministry and served at a Lutheran church in Schaumberg, Illinois then moved to Chicago studied law, worked in business and was named to the Chicago City Council, 1852-1860. An organizer of the Republican Party in Illinois, he was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1860. Established the International Bank in 1866 and was active in restoring banks and businesses after the Chicago fire in 1871. First editor of German paper Illinois Staat Zeitung and edited several others including a farm paper in Wisconsin after he retired.
