Father of John Wardlaw Brodie, Jr. (1828-1914) and husband of Sarah Kitchings Brodie; resident of Oak Grove plantation in Aiken County, S.C. [originally in Orangeburg District, S.C.]; the index to the 1860 U.S. Census lists John W. Brodie and John W. Brodie, Jr., as residents of Orangeburg District, S.C.
