1774 admitted to Lincoln's Inn; 1779 called to the bar; 1783-1790 Member of Parliament for Anstruther East burghs; 1790-1796 Member of Parliament for Cockermouth; 1793-1797 chief justice of the north Wales great sessions; 1793-1795 solicitor-general to the Prince of Wales; 1796-1797 Member of Parliament for Anstruther East burghs; 1797-1806 chief justice of Bengal; 1798 raised to a baronetcy of Great Britain; 1806-1811 Member of Parliament for Anstruther East burghs; 1808 succeeded his elder brother, Philip, to the Anstruther Scottish baronetcy; 1810 made a doctor of civil law by Oxford University.
