Dates:
Active 1901
Active 1986

Biographical notes:

The Hypatia Club was founded during the 1880s by Miss Ella Carpenter and several other young teachers on the staff of Central School, and was originally called the English History and Literature Study Club. The name was later changed to the Social and Literary Recluse Group. As the membership grew to include many who were not teachers, the organization was reorganized as the Hypatia Club in 1896.

Originally established for the purpose of studying English history, the Hypatia Club later expanded its scope to include the literature, drama, art, music and history of Europe. The club also was active in promoting good works. Membership was restricted to thirty persons.
