Founded in 1870 under the auspices of the American Home Missionary Society of the Baptist Church as Benedict Institute when Mrs. Bathsheba A. Benedict of Pawtucket, R.I., gave the society $5,000, a small bequest from her husband; originally designed to educate ministers and teachers the institution is now independent.
