Biographical notes:
Lionel F. Artis (1895-1971) was born in Paris, Illinois and moved to Indianapolis as a child. He served in the army during World War I. He attended Butler University, the University of Chicago, and Indiana University. A civic leader in Indianapolis, Artis served on the board of directors of 23 organizatations. He was the first African American to be appointed to a policy-maming municipal agency within the city, the Indianapolis Board of Health and Hospitals.
