Joseph Forrest mustered into service as a private in Company A of the 8th Illinois Infantry in July 1861. The Eighth Illinois was involved in battles at Shiloh and Corinth (1862), and Vicksburg (1863). After three years of active duty, Joseph was mustered out and honorably discharged in early December 1863. A few days later, he reenlisted in the same outfit while it was in camp at Vicksburg, Mississippi. During Joseph's first furlough (August 1863) he returned to Macon County, Illinois and married Elizabeth Ehrhart. The couple moved to Jewell County, Kansas in 1872 where Joseph served as a Methodist minister. In 1875 the family moved to Minneapolis, Kansas where Joseph took ill and died.
