Biographical notes:

John Stone (1936-2008), poet, physician, and lecturer. Stone was born in Jackson, Mississippi. After getting his B.A. from Millsaps College in 1958 and his M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis in 1962, Stone accepted a fellowship in cardiology at Emory University. In addition to teaching at Emory, Stone also worked at Grady Memorial Hospital from 1974-1985. Stone's first book of poetry, THE SMELL OF MATCHES was published in 1972. Other poetry volumes followed, including ALL THIS RAIN (1980), RENAMING THE STREETS (1985), and WHERE WATER BEGINS: NEW POEMS AND PROSE (1998). He also published several books of essays on medicine, including IN THE COUNTRY OF HEARTS: JOURNEYS IN THE ART OF MEDICINE (1990) and ON DOCTORING: STORIES, POEMS, ESSAYS (1991). Stone died on November 6, 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia.
