Author Frederick R. Bechdolt was born in Pennsylvania, and attended the universities of North Dakota and Washington. He worked on odd jobs in the west for several years, including gold mining in Alaska, driving sled dogs, and helping drill the Cascade tunnel, before becoming a journalist in California. He later wrote fiction and non-fiction with western themes and settings, including novels, stories, fact-based collections of tales, and articles. He settled in Carmel, California, where he was active in the community, and became known as one of the Carmel bunch.
