Biographical notes:
Marriot Arbuthnot, British naval officer, appointed commissioner of the navy at Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1775. In 1780, Arbuthnot and Henry Clinton joined forces in an expedition against Charleston, South Carolina, which surrendered in May. In June, hearing news of a French fleet heading to New York, Arbuthnot and Clinton returned north, blockading Admiral Ternay at Gardiner's Bay, Long Island.
