Biographical notes:

Henry Elling, Montana banker and investor, was born in Germany on December 9, 1842. After the death of his parents when he was fifteen, Elling emigrated to the United States and settled with his brother in Missouri. After several unsuccessful business ventures in the Midwest, he moved to Virginia City, Montana, and established the Banking House of Henry Elling, a private bank. He also organized a number of banks for neighboring communities. In 1899, Elling reorganized his banking house to form the Elling State Bank. Elling also maintained interest in several local companies by partnering with other investors, and became one of the largest landowners in Madison County, Montana. He died of pneumonia on November 14, 1900.
