Blair R. Holmes was born 29 June 1942 in Victor, Idaho to Harold Harper Holmes and Audrey Muriel Berger Holmes. Following graduation from Teton High School in 1960, where he was both senior class president and class valedictorian, he attended Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. After one year of study at Idaho State he left, in the fall of 1961, for Austria where he served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After the completion of his LDS mission in the spring of 1964, he attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he studied history. On 26 August 1965 he married Margie Green in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Following graduation from BYU in 1966, he received a national fellowship award to study Eastern European history at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. Holmes completed his PhD in 1972. He has been employed at BYU since 1971 when he accepted a faculty position in the History Department. He and his wife Margie are the parents of six children: Brian, Steven, Christopher, Karin, Robert and Richard.

Holmes was born on December 28, 1911 in Ogden, Utah, was raised in Wamsutter, Wyoming, and lived in Victor, Idaho. He died on June 13, 2001.

Blair Ralph Holmes was born June 29, 1942 in Victor, Idaho, to Harold Harper Holmes and Audrey Muriel Berger Holmes. On August 26, 1965 he married Margie Green in the Idaho Falls Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Following graduation from Brigham Young University in 1966, he studied Eastern European history at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. Holmes completed his PhD in 1972.
