Ripper, Charles L.

Charles Lewis Ripper was born in Pittsburgh, PA, October 28, 1929 to an ornamental iron worker and an art teacher. Inheriting a talent for art, he studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and had illustrated his first book before reaching the age of twenty. His signature inscription, "That path of nature declared most interesting is but the path most patiently observed." sums up his feelings of the outdoors. A deep commitment to conservation and education, Ripper has used his artwork as a tool, geared toward children, in the natural sciences. By 1972, he had published eleven books with the New York based publisher, Morrow, all self-illustrated, including titles such as Bats, Hawks, Moles and Shrews, Ground Birds, Swallows and Mosquitoes.
