The General Society of the Cincinnati was founded in May 1783 at the Verplank house, Fishkill, New York, by Continental Army officers who fought in the American Revolution. It was organized in fourteen constituent societies, one of which is the Massachusetts Society.
After the war, Leland engaged in lumbering and general merchandising in Saco; he was a state senator (1805-1808). He was an original member of the Massachusetts Society (1783-1824).
