Biographical notes:

Educator, California's first Superintendent of Schools. Sailed around Horn to California (1852-1853). Letters describe experiences of voyage and first impressions of San Francisco. Singled out for special mention are Chinese, prostitutes, scenery and schools. Collection includes information about Swett, probably inserted by his granddaughter, Margaret Plummer, and a painting of "SS Revere" on which Swett sailed.
