Joseph Drummond Hunt was born in Lexington, Ky., August 14, 1838. He received his B. S. degree from Centre College, Danville, Ky. in 1857 and his LLD degree from the University of Louisville in 1861. In 1862 he joined the Confederate Army as a private in the Eighth Kentucky Cavalry. Hunt participated in the battle at Hartsville, Tn. and was captured in Buffington, Ohio while serving under the command of General John Hunt Morgan. Later he taught school in Todd County, Ky., resumed law practice in Hopkinsville and returned to Lexington in June 1867 continuing his legal career. He served as city attorney (1868-9 and 1873), was appointed circuit judge (1874-1880) and returned to general practice in 1880. He also found time to administer the affairs of the Northern Bank of Kentucky and serve as alderman for the city of Lexington, Ky. for two terms.
