Born in Iowa in 1997, Pence's YMCA career covered a period of more than 40 years. He began in student work at Robert College in Constantinople, Turkey and in Illinois. Other positions included war service in France and with the National War Work Council, and 23 years on the staff of the National Council. After retirement in 1949, Pence represented the World Alliance of the YMCAs at the United Nations.

Born in Keokuk, Iowa on September 2, 1887, Pence's YMCA career covered a period of more than 40 years. He began in student work at Robert College, Constantinople (now Istanbul), Turkey and in Illinois. Other positions included war service in France and with the National War Work Council, and 23 years on the staff of the National Council in the personnel department and later as director of the Bureau of Records, Studies and Trends and editor of the YMCA yearbook. After retirement in 1949, Pence represented the World Alliance of the YMCAs at the United Nations, where he was one of the best known and widely respected representatives of non-governmental organizations.
