He earned three degrees from Ohio State University: a B.S. in Optometry in 1939, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Physiological Optics in 1940 and 1942. He was awarded several honorary degrees, including an O.D. from the Los Angeles College of Optometry in 1954.

He retired from his academic position in 1979 and was awarded the title Rudy Professor Emeritus by the Board of Trustees. Over the course of his career, Hofstetter wrote, co-authored, or edited more than 400 works, including four editions of the Dictionary of Visual Science, and Optometry: Professional, Economic, and Legal Aspects, which became the standard text on the subject.
