The Library Quarterly was designed as a "journal of investigation and discussion in the field of library science." The journal was established in 1931 by the Graduate Library School. It was partially funded by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation.

The Graduate Library School was established in 1926 with support from a grant from the Carnegie Corporation. It was the first library school in America to offer a doctorate in library science work.
