Joan Kiddell-Monroe is a free-lance artist and illustrator who also wrote children's books (1939-1949, self-illustrated). She has received the Carnegie Medal Commendation from the British Library Association (1955), the Boys' Club Award and Lewis Carroll Shelf Award (1961), and the Children's Books of the Year award from the Child Study Association (1968).

Joan Kiddell-Monroe was born August 9, 1908, in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, England. She made a career as a free-lance artist and illustrator, and also write a few self-illustrated children's books. Early in her career she worked in an advertising studio. Her work has earned her several awards.
