John David Hennessey was born in London on 16 Dec 1847. In 1872 he entered the Wesleyan College, Richmond, to study for the Methodist ministry. In 1875 he arrived in Australia and in May of the same year started work as a minister in Stanthorpe. Between 1886 and 1891 Hennessey edited The Australian Christian World, a paper that he had started under the name of The Christian Messenger.

Hennessey published a number of short stories and novels, including A Tail of Gold and The Outlaw. He died in Victoria in 1935.
