Robert Wormeley Carter (1734-1797) was the grandson of Robert "King" Carter, the chief architect of the family fortune, and the first son of Landon Carter (1710-1778). As the first son and principal heir, Robert inherited a considerable estate including Sabine Hall in Richmond County, Virginia, and he is frequently referred to as "Robert Carter of Sabine Hall." He followed the family tradition of assuming a position of responsibility in the community--from 1769-1776 he served in the House of Burgesses, in 1775 he was a member of the Richmond Convention, and in 1779, 1781 and 1782 he served in the House of Delegates.

Carter kept a diary most of his adult life, but the records for only 17 years are known to exist today. All but one of the diaries were entered in interleaved copies of the _Virginia Almanack_ printed by John Dixon and Alexander Purdie of Williamsburg.
