Walter Oddie was a merchant turned landscape painter in New York City.
The son of John Oddie and Cornelia Wattles, Oddie was a merchant and then stockbroker from 1831 to 1847. In 1825, he married Julia Austin Meigs. His father-in-law, Henry Meigs, seems to have supported his artistic ambitions. Oddie was an associate member of the National Academy from 1833 until his death in 1865. His landscapes were chiefly of Long Island, Hudson Valley, and New England scenes. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Boston Athenaeum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Washington Art Association, and the New Jersey Art-Union.
