James Smith, journalist, was born near Maidstone, Kent, U.K. Among his publications while in England were "Wilton and its associations" (1851) and "Lights and shadows of artist life and character" (1853). In 1854 he emigrated to Victoria, where he wrote for the Melbourne Age, the Leader and Argus, among others. He was also librarian to the Victorian Parliament in later years.
