Organizational History

The Department of History was one of the four founding departments of the Division of Humanities in the College of Arts, Letters, and Science when the University of California, Irvine opened in 1965. The department, with Henry Cord Meyer as the founding chair, was established with seven faculty members. In 1968, the department became part of the newly created School of Humanities. Now with thirty full time faculty members, History is one of the largest departments within the School of Humanities. The department offers a diverse curriculum with courses in United States, Latin American, European, Middle Eastern, Asian, and World history. The Department of History offers undergraduate and graduate programs leading to the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees.
