Biographical notes:

The Hanaper was the financial department of the Chancery (although accountable to the Exchequer), which handled monies paid to the Crown as fees or fines for grants under the Great Seal. James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos, (1673-1744) became Clerk of the Hanaper of Chancery in 1728 (the reversionary rights to which office he had obtained in 1714). He was succeeded in office by his son, Henry Brydges, the 2nd Duke who held the post until his death in 1771.
