Baptist minister, professor of Rhetoric and Belle Letters at Granville College (now Denison University), Granville, Ohio. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, 1821, to Appleton and Juliette (Rathbone) Downer; died in Urbana, Ohio, 1901. Served churches in Xenia, Ohio; in Allegheny and Philadelphia, Pa.; and in Urbana and Sydney, Ohio.
