Peel Yates, David, 1911-1978
Biographical notes:
Sir David Peel Yates (1911-1978), British Army officer, began his military career when he joined the South Wales Borderers in 1931. He served in India in 1937, and during World War II, he was commanding officer of the 6th Battalion; general staff officer, 14th Division; and acting commanding officer, 138th Brigade in North Africa and the Middle East. During the 1950s, he was an instructor, NATO Defense College in Paris, and commander, 27th Infantry Brigade in Hong Kong. In the 1960s, he was chief of staff, Eastern Command; general officer commanding in the British Sector, Berlin, Germany; and general officer commanding-in-chief in both the Eastern and Southern Commands. He retired in 1969.
