1821-1823 ensign, Bengal native infantry; 1823-1824 student Trinity College, Cambridge; 1824 resumed army career; deputy judge-advocate-general, Meerut; assistant secretary, military department, Calcutta; 1841 judge-advocate general, Bengal; 1845-1846 served in the First Anglo-Sikh War; c 1845 lieutenant colonel; 1849 served in the Second Anglo-Sikh War and was made a CB; 1850 served as a brigadier-general at Kohat Pass; 1852-1861 secretary, the military department, the Indian government; 1854 colonel; 1860 KCB; 1861 returned to Britain; 1862 lieutenant-general.
