Biography

Philip L. Boyd was born on October 8th, 1900 in Richmond, Indiana. He attended Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1922. He served as the manager of Bank of America's Palm Springs, California branch from 1929-1930. Boyd was elected as the first Mayor of Palm Springs in 1938, a position he held until 1942. From 1945-1949 Boyd served on the California State Assembly and later became an active member of the Riverside Citizens University Committee.

Boyd was instrumental in the establishment of the University of California, Riverside and in 1957 he was appointed to the UC Board of Regents where he remained until his resignation in 1970. Throughout the years Boyd preserved his close ties to UC Riverside and later donated land in Deep Canyon to the campus. This land, which later became the Philip L. Boyd Desert Research Center, is a 16,301 acre reserve that is part of the University of California Natural Reserve System. Philip L Boyd passed away on September 16th, 1989 at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage at the age of 88.
