Judge, state legislator, lawyer, civic leader, and president of Rock Island and La Salle Railroad Company. Grant was born in North Carolina, was admitted to the bar in Illinois in 1834 and moved from Chicago to Davenport, Iowa in 1838. He served in the Iowa Territorial Legislature (1841), represented Scott County, Iowa in the first state constitutional convention and held the position of speaker of the Iowa Legislature in 1852.
