Biographical notes:
Leonard Kip (1774-1846) was a merchant in New York City and later the president of the North River Bank. He resided in Hartford, Connecticut toward the end of his life. Leonard Kip married Maria Ingraham and had three daughters and two sons: Reverend William Ingraham Kip (1811-?), who became Bishop of California, and Leonard Kip, a lawyer and writer of Albany, New York, who married Harriet Van Rensselaer. The Kip family came to America in 1635 with Hendrick Kype, resided over the generations in New York City and Albany, New York as well as on the large land acquisitions of Kipsburg, now Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York and the Kip's Bay farm on the shore of the East River in New York City between 26th and 42nd Streets.
