Biographical notes:

Edward Hooker was born at Farmington, Connecticut in 1822. He entered the merchant service in 1836 and entered the US Navy on 20 July 1861 when he was appointed acting master. He served on board Louisiana and Victoria before being transferred to the Potomac Flotilla where he command Currituck, Yankee and Commodore Reed. He was wounded on 5 October 1861 while cutting out a privateer and was subsequently in the Burnside Expedition and all of its engagements. After the Civil War he served as the naval store keeper at New York and commanded Idaho. He retired with the rank of commander on 25 December 1884.
