Biographical notes:

Attorney. Born August 2, 1929 in Burbank, California. While in high school he met Virginia and Jesse M. Unruh and Jean and Robert Wells, with whom he founded a James Roosevelt for Governor Club. While attending UCLA, he participated in the California Democratic Guild. Holen served as assemblyman Unruh's legislative adviser from 1959-61. In 1961 Holen became the first full-time consultant to the Assembly Committee on Ways and Means and chaired the "NO on Proposition 14" campaign in 1964, fighting repeal of the Rumford Fair Housing Act. At the time of this interview Holen was serving on the boards of directors of the California Museum Foundation, the Los Angeles Theatre Center, and the Southern California Rapid Transit District.
