Biographical notes:

Rear Admiral Kenneth Charles Hurd (1902-1977), a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, served on the USS S-41 with the Asiatic Fleet in Manila. When he returned to the United States, he was injured while studying marine engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. Subsequent submarine-related activities included service in the Panama Canal Zone, command of the USS SEAL in the Philippines, and divisional and squadron commands. At the end of World War II, Hurd was the commander of Submarine Squadron 32. During the Korean War, he was captain of USS Lamar and commanded Transport Division 13. He became head of the Policy and Planning Branch of Naval Intelligence in 1953 before retiring in 1955.
