Lee, Manning de Villeneuve, 1894-1980

American artist and illustrator Manning de Villeneuve Lee (1894- ) was born in Summerville, South Carolina and educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

Born March 15, 1894, in Summerville, SC; died March 31, 1980 in Chestnut Hill, PA. Attended Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, 1914-15, 1919-22, and studied art in Europe, 1921. His career in illustration began with drawings for periodicals. He was the illustrator for more than 200 books, mostly for young people. His works hang in a number of public buildings and is represented in numerous private collections. He received a Gold Medal from the Charleston Exposition, 1907. Manning de Villeneuve Lee (1894-1980) was an artist and illustrator born in Summerville, South Carolina. Lee studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. His paintings can be found in many private and public collections in the United States and abroad. Lee's work often appeared in magazines, and he illustrated more than two hundred books. He specialized in historical subjects and books for young people, including Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped, Rupert S. Holland's Historic Ships, and Andrew Lang's Blue Fairy Book.
