Biographical notes:

Robert Lang Campbell was born 21 January 1825 to Alexander Campbell and Agnes Lang in Scotland. He was baptized in August 1842. He served a mission in Scotland and Wales from 1843-1845. He emigrated to Utah, and was engaged in clerical work in Nauvoo and in Salt Lake City. While in Salt Lake, he was the chief clerk/city recorder in the Church Historian's office. He died 11 April 1872.

Robert Lang Campbell was an early Mormon educator, and one of the pioneers who crossed the Overland Trail in 1854. He was the Territorial Superintendant of Schools, and is widely held responsible for the birth of the school system in Utah.
