Assistant in the magnetical and meteorological department of the Royal Observatory at Greenwich 1840-1844. Then became observer in the private observatory of George Bishop (F.R.S. 1848) at South Villa, Regent's Park, London (1844-1861). F.R.A.S. 1844. Foreign Secretary 1847-1857. President 1880-1881. Elected F.R.S. 1851, but this was declared void. Re-elected F.R.S. 1863. Superintendent of the Nautical Almanac 1853-1891. He discovered ten minor planets Iris (1847) Flora (1847) Victoria (1850) Irene (1851) Melpomene (1852) Fortune (1852) Calliope (1852) Thalia (1852) Enterpe (1853) and Urania (1854). Lallande Medallist of the Head of Sciences, Paris, three times. Author of 'The Solar System '1852 and 'Comets' 1853.
