Biographical notes:

The Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations (COEMAR) was formed in 1959 by the newly constituted United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. to combine the foreign and domestic mission agencies of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and the United Presbyterian Church of North America. COEMAR was dissolved in 1972 when the Church reorganized its agencies; most of COEMAR's functions were taken over by the Program Agency. During all but the last year of its existence, COEMAR's General Secretary was John Coventry Smith.
