University of Utah. Intercollegiate Athletics Office

Biographical notes:

An Athletic Association was organized at the University of Utah in 1894 and the first paid coach was hired in 1900. In 1925 Ike Armstrong became coach and head of the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics in the Department of Physical Education, Health, and Hygiene. At this time intercollegiate athletic teams were trained by the Division; business activities were supervised by the Athletic Council. In 1949 Ike Armstrong was given the title of Athletic Director.

In 1951 Jack C. Curtice became Athletic Director and head of the Division which was still located in what was now called the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. In 1954 intercollegiate athletics became a separate administrative department and Jack C. Curtice was named Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. James R. Jack served as Director from 1958 to 1975 and Arnie Ferrin from 1975 through 1984.
