Mrs. Barnes was known for her cultural, civic and charitable contributions to Detroit and the Italian community.

Daughter of Minerva Tarquinio, an opera singer, and Anthony Maullo, a Detroit attorney, Florence Maiullo Barnes was known for her cultural, civic and charitable contributions to Detroit and the Italian community. She and her husband, James Merriman Barnes, had one child, Antonia (Toni) Maiullo Barnes. She was known as a gourmet cook, gardener, pianist and artist; and also studied pottery and sculpture at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit. She was honored in 1985 by the Columbus Day Committee as "Women of the Year" for her services on behalf of the Italian American Community. Florence Barnes was a member of the Detroit Institute of Arts Founders Society, W omen's association for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Wayne State University Understudies association, National Italian American Foundation, Italian American Cultural Society, Boys' Town of Italy, and other organizations.
