Albert Ernest Coates served as a medical orderly in 1914 and then saw action on Gallipoli and in France. He undertook medical studies after the war. In 1941 he was appointed lieutenant colonel and Senior Surgeon to the second AIF in Malaya. He became a prisoner of the Japanese and treated the prisoners of war on the Burma-Thailand Railway.
