The Dallas Museum for Contemporary Arts (DMCA) was founded in 1957 and was a direct outgrowth of the Dallas Society for Contemporary Arts organized in 1956. Originally comprised of fifteen artists and architects, the Society was founded by sculptor Heri Bert Bartscht, who also served as its first president. The DMCA organized significant exhibitions on contemporary art from 1957 to 1963, when it merged with the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. Edward Marcus served as the first president of the DMCA and Douglas MacAgy was the DMCA's first and only professional director. DMCA exhibitions such as "American Genius in Review: I" (1960) and "Rene Magritte in America" (1960-1961) were groundbreaking for their time and put Dallas at the forefront of the contemporary arts scene.

The Dallas Museum of Contemporary Art was founded by the Dallas Society for Contemporary Arts in 1956. In 1963 a merger of DMCA with the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts was approved, with the arrangement that the former DMCA collection would continue to be owned and maintained by DMCA.
